The artwork is installed! A few finishing touches to go on the footings, but we're delighted to see it in place!
A colour rendering of the sculpture with mild steel panels white powder coated, and fibreglass 3 dimensional elements as above. The colours come from Alexandra Exeter's work (see Design Ideas) and have been chosen for maximum visual impact. The head is bronze resin, the piston in aluminium resin, and the umbrella in Gentian Blue with a Nut Brown handle, and a selection of warm colours for the shopping bags. To highlight the colours of the shopping bags, contrasting colours will be used for each handle - a welcome addition to the design.
Finally, the drawings are complete and ready for the steel to be laser cut. This shows the front, and then the back of the sculpture. From base to centre point is approximately 180cms, to ensure a wide visibility from the station platform and the entrance to the station from Freeport Shopping Village. 6mm mild steel, white powder coated for all parts, apart from the train wheel in 4mm satin stainless steel. In part, it has been designed to be assembled by hand on site. In the next few weeks, all of the pieces will be delivered to our studio, where we will assemble the work before it arrives on site.
This is the image of all the steel parts drawn on CAD by Richard at www.lifco.co.uk, the bespoke lift manufacturer in Essex. We're pleased with this design - it reflects the steam train wheels and the figurative nature of the sculpture. There are a few more technical aspects to be completed, but here it is in design form. The pieces will be laser cut from 6mm sheet steel with wind resistance reduced through the open filigree of the design.
We have temporarily installed a cardboard mock up of what the sculpture will look like - apart from the colour! This is a full scale model of the proposed design, but the end result will be much more colourful. We wanted to see the height and sacle of the full sized work, and how it would look on the site. We could do it all with photoshop, but there's nothing like actually being there! It's quite a windy spot, and that has brought some new design considerations.
Here's the proposed site - visible from Freeport Rail platform, from the train, and visible from Freeport Shopping Village!
